Although many people believe the Maya to have been brute savages (as did Cortez), the Maya were extraordinarily advanced for their time. Their calendar system was far beyond that of the Europeans. Also, they had a legal system that was not all that different from our own. It allowed for grievances, divorce, and punishment for wrongdoings.
Their astronomy is something to be viewed in awe of. The time that the Mayan astronomers must have spent collecting data on the stars can only be summed up as obsessive! Their whole world revolved around the stars. To them, it was a map to the future. Reading into the meaning of the placements and alignments of cellestrial bodies gave them insight into what could be expected to come.
7th century Mayan prophet, Pacal Votan, Proclaimed that the last period on the Mayan calendar would herald a great upheaval in universal thinking. He foretold of the present day reliance on worldly possessions instead of Mother Earth. This shift, he saw, would culminate into an apocalyptic transition back to the beginning of time. After the great end, a new era of peace and uniformity in the universe would reappear and all would be rebalanced. This is sometimes referred to as, "the end of time as we know it." The new beginning, as stated on the ancient Mayan Long Count Calendar, takes place on December 23, 2012. Votan and the Mayans did not create another calendar that supersedes this date for a reason; time after this point is a mute object. Although we (humanity) are in the midst of trying times (the apocalypse), it this calendar represents a great hope for us. A new beginning is just around the corner!
